Stoke Gifford news round-up (May/Jun 2018)

Stoke Gifford news round-up.

This month we’ve seen the warm summer sunshine turn into cloud and thunderstorms, however, this hasn’t stopped the Stoke Gifford community from working hard and celebrating their successes.

St Michael’s Primary School

The children of St Michael’s have just celebrated the end of term with their own rendition of ‘Beauty and the Beast’ (see photo to the right), performed in the auditorium of the St Michael’s Centre.

Headteacher Mark Freeman said:

“The children of St Michael’s School excelled themselves once again with their performance of Beauty and the Beast, played in front of rapturous audiences over two nights in the magnificent St Michael’s Church Centre.  The performance was the culmination of nearly six months of rehearsals, costume-making and set-creation, and the result was an absolute treat. As has become expected with our tradition at St Michaels’s, what stood out above all else was the wonderful singing, including both solo and ensemble pieces, and the joy and enthusiasm of the children was striking. None of this would happen without the dedication of the staff and parents of the school, who all contributed in different ways to this year’s success. The school have also been celebrating sporting success as their football team won the cup final, beating Bromley Heath 3-0. They are now hoping to continue their winning streak when they compete in the ‘champions’ league’ next term.

June is going to be a month of sport for the children of St Michaels with many exciting events coming up throughout the month. On Saturday 9th June, Year 1 are taking part in the Bradley Stoke Youth football festival at the Jubilee Centre and on Saturday 16th, the school are entering three teams into the Festival of Sport which is taking place at the WISE Campus. St Michael’s are also hosting their own sports week between 25th and 29th June which include sports days for all year groups, intra-school competitions and a cross country competition.

One of the biggest events coming up in June is the school fair, run by the PTFA. On 30th June the school grounds will be filled with various stalls including tombola, nail painting, raffle and a BBQ. The fair is open to everyone and money raised will go straight back to the school.

Abbeywood Community School

The students of Abbeywood also showed off their talents this month with their performances of ‘We Will Rock You’ on 3rd and 4th May. After ten months of hard work and rehearsals the cast put on a musical extravaganza for their audience. To see some photos of the performance please click here.

On Thursday 10th May, students of the fundraising club held a fete to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West (for photos, please click here). They had a cake sale as well as a raffle, guess the number of sweets in the jar and sponge the teacher. All of the organisers hard work paid off as they raised £537.52 for their chosen charity.

Celebrating their sporting successes this month were the students who took part in the South Gloucestershire Athletics Championships on 16th May. Although the year 10 students were missing due to exam commitments, the rest of the team were able to achieve 10th place out of 15 with many students coming in 1st or 2nd for their individual events.

St Michael’s Church

On 13th May, St Michael’s Church held their ‘Gift Day’ in order to raise funds for the church and the work that it does in the community and beyond. So far, St Michael’s has reported that £343,000 has been pledged and they are incredibly pleased with the generosity of those who have donated. Some of the money raised will be used to pay off a mortgage loan and then work will continue to be done on the Old School Rooms, the church building and the church centre.

Coming up on Saturday 9th June is the summer gospel concert. The Stoke Gifford section of Gospel Generation Community Choir are going to be performing alongside the other sections of the choir at The Victoria Rooms in Bristol. Tickets are available from ticketsource.co.uk/gospelgenerationcommunitychoir or on the door.

This year, Church on the Green is going to be taking place on Sunday 24th June at 11am. All are welcome to go along and listen to stories and songs being shared and you are welcome to take a picnic as well. Everyone is also invited to watch the England versus Panama World Cup football match in the auditorium at 1pm.
