The Barnardo’s charity shop located on Ratcliffe Drive in Stoke Gifford (next door to Tesco Express) will be holding a fun day on Saturday 1st June.

After the success of last year’s ‘raise £1,000 in a month’ challenge, staff at the store have been asked to complete the task again. In 2018, the target was set in September and through a variety of fundraising events, the store was able to raise nearly £1,300. This year, they are hoping to exceed the target by an even greater margin.

The fun day is taking place at the store between 10.30am and 4pm. There will be a whole host of activities, including a bouncy castle (weather permitting), cake sale, raffle and lucky dip. There is even going to be a take-away cream tea stall where you can buy a scone with jam and clotted cream and a tea bag – to enjoy in the comfort of your own home.

The members of staff who are organising the fun day are also looking for volunteers – whether it is to help on the day or to donate cakes or prizes. If this is something that you think you might be interested in, please contact store associates Julie Britt or Natasha Kirby by popping into the shop or calling 0117 931 4115.

Barnardo’s charity fun day brings in over £500

The Barnardo’s charity shop in Stoke Gifford has exceeded expectations by surpassing its target of raising £1,000 throughout September.

Staff were originally given the challenge in September when they were asked to raise an extra £1,000 in addition to their usual sales. In order to succeed, they knew that they would need members of the local community to help by volunteering their time and ideas for how they could raise the extra money. To kick start the project, the charity shop, which is located on Ratcliffe Drive, held a Bank Holiday Fun Day on Saturday 25th August to raise awareness as well as vital funds. There was face painting, a magician, a balloon artist, cake sale, lucky dip and a raffle. The event was enjoyed by all who attended and made a great start towards the fundraising target. Julie Britt, store associate, said: “We are amazed at how well we have done in the first couple of weeks. The Fun Day event was a great success and we raised over £500!”

The staff at Barnardo’s have now surpassed their £1,000 target due to a number of other events that took place throughout September. These included a trampoline taster session held at Cardiff Metropolitan University which raised £85, a stall held outside the Barnardo’s shop run by two managers from Santander which raised £56, a bag pack at Tesco Extra which raised £246 and a generous donation from a customer.

Fantastic first year for Barnardo’s charity shop in Stoke Gifford

Fundraisers are celebrating the success of a Stoke Gifford charity shop which has received thousands of bags of donations.

Barnardo’s opened a new store in Ratcliffe Drive (next to Tesco Express) last March. Since then the charity has received more than 5,000 bags of clothing, accessories, homeware, books, toys and games.

Barnardo’s has also been supported by a group of hard-working volunteers who contributed hundreds of hours to help with sorting the stock and serving customers.

The Stoke Gifford team celebrated their success by holding a party on Saturday, 11th March which featured face-painting, cupcakes, a tombola, a lucky dip and the cutting of a specially-decorated cake

The store is managed by Hannah Jones together with store associate Julie Britt. Hannah said:

“We wanted to arrange a special ‘thank you’ for everyone who has worked so hard during our first year.”

“We have an amazing team of ten volunteers aged from 14 to 76 years old who offer so much of their own time each week. Their commitment has played a vital role in our success.”

Hannah added:

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the generosity and support of the local community throughout the past twelve months.”

“The number of donations has been fantastic, but we’ve also received some very unusual items – including a miniature set of Shakespeare books from the 1920s which were just three inches wide!”

“We look forward to receiving many more items which can be re-sold to support the charity’s work with the UK’s most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.”
