Music, food and family activities are all coming together in Stoke Gifford for a special fun day in aid of a local charity.

The whole community is invited to join in with family-friendly activities on Saturday 28th September at the Co-operative food store in North Road, Stoke Gifford.

From 12pm to 5pm there will be a range of entertainment at the convenience store in aid of Children’s Hospice South West.

The North Somerset hospice cares for children with life-limiting conditions and their families by providing respite care and short breaks, as well as emergency, palliative and end of life care from its three hospices.

Chloe Humphries, Store Manager at the Stoke Gifford store which is part of Southern Co-op – the independent, local co-operative, said:

“We would be delighted if as many people as possible could join us and help us spread the word so we can raise as much money as we can for this great cause.

“We are not ticketing the event but all donations will be appreciated.”

“As well as raising money, we also hope it will bring people together from all over our local community and help everyone to get to know each other a bit better. We can’t wait!”

There will be children’s characters, refreshments, a bouncy castle, a children’s ride, hair braiding, face painting, waffles, a visit from Sav’s Super Whippy ice cream van and the classic game of ‘hook a duck’.

The Co-operative Food store is supporting the children’s hospice as part of Southern Co-op’s community engagement programme ‘Love Your Neighbourhood’.

This initiative enables colleagues to support local causes through donations, fundraising and volunteering and aims to help neighbourhoods become greener, healthier, safe or more inclusive.

Training sessions are about to get a bit warmer for the Stoke Lane Lions Under-10s football teams, thanks to a donation from a local Co-operative store.

The community-based youth football team has bought new training hoodies for all 22 players thanks to a £500 donation from Southern Co-op’s store in North Road, Stoke Gifford.

The hoodies will help keep them warm as they train in all weathers.

Alex Whitton, Store Manager at Southern Co-op’s Stoke Gifford store, said:

“All the children have at the moment is their main kit provided by the club. They were in need of something to help them keep warm when it gets cold or they are waiting around on the pitch.”

“They love playing football, so hopefully this will help them play in all weathers. The club is very local and it gives children of all ages the opportunity to participate in organised football.”

“My own son has played in the team since he was five or six years old, so it is great to watch him and the other players growing.”

The U10 Lions team, which is run exclusively by parents and volunteers, is now playing in its third season. It forms part of Stoke Lane AFC, which prides itself on being family-orientated, with players of every age group at the heart of the club.

Residents of Stoke Gifford may have noticed some new signs being placed around the car park of the local Co-operative store over the last few days.

The store, located on North Road, has implemented new parking restrictions which were put into place as of Monday 14th January.

A spokesperson for Southern Co-op said:

“From 14th January, the car park connected to our store in North Road, Stoke Gifford will be limited to two hours of parking. This is to deter all-day parking. The car park will remain free to use.”

Cameras have been set up to monitor the parking and if the two-hour maximum stay is breached, you are at risk of receiving a £100 parking charge notice (PCN).
