Little Stoke recycling centre to stop accepting some categories of waste

Local DIY enthusiasts will no longer be able to dispose of hardcore, rubble and plasterboard at the Stoke Gifford Sort It! Centre after South Gloucestershire Council announced restrictions on the types of waste that will be accepted at the site with effect from Monday 18th May.

The council says the changes are intended to “open up more space to ensure that staff and residents can safely move around the site,” which is the smallest of four household waste facilities operated by the authority.

The move comes just over a month after an employee of the site operator SUEZ Environment (formerly SITA UK) suffered “serious” injuries after being in collision with a shovel loading vehicle during the process of exchanging containers.

The full list of items that will no longer be accepted at the Station Road site is as follows: Cans, aerosols, foil, paper, glass bottles and jars, plastic containers (bottles, yoghurt pots, margarine tubs etc), tyres, plasterboard, hardcore and rubble.

Rigid/hard plastic items such as children’s toys and garden furniture will still be accepted.

The council emphasises that cans, aerosols, foil, paper, glass bottles and jars, plastic containers can continue to be disposed off via its fortnightly kerbside collection service.

A spokesperson for South Gloucestershire Council said:

“To minimise the impact and inconvenience to local residents, we have chosen to discontinue the items that will affect the least number of people who use Stoke Gifford Sort It! Centre. We have selected items that every household can dispose of through our normal household recycling collections, such as cans, glass, paper and plastics. Others are items that residents don’t need to dispose of on a regular basis, such as hardcore, rubble, plasterboard and tyres.”

The Stoke Gifford Sort It! recycling centre in Station Road, Little Stoke has been temporarily closed today (Thursday 9th April) following an accident in which an employee of the site operator SUEZ Environment (formerly SITA UK) suffered “serious” injuries.

The incident is understood to have occurred at approximately 9.45am and the injured employee was taken to Southmead Hospital by paramedics. A statement issued at midday described the employee’s injuries as “serious, but not life-threatening”.

A South Gloucestershire Council spokesperson said:

“A SUEZ Environment employee was unfortunately injured in an accident involving a SUEZ vehicle at the Stoke Gifford Sort It! centre earlier this morning. We have closed the centre whilst the police and SUEZ carry out a full investigation and the Health & Safety Executive has been informed.”

A SUEZ Environment spokesperson added:

“The injured employee was in the process of exchanging containers when a collision occurred with a shovel loading vehicle. The incident took place in an area of the site that is off limits to the public.”

“While the police enquiries are ongoing, it has been necessary to close the site to members of the public today. We expect that it will reopen as normal tomorrow (Friday 10th April).”

“Anyone wishing to visit the Stoke Gifford Sort It! Centre today should instead use the facilities at Yate, Mangotsfield or Thornbury. We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this.”

Civic amenity site to close for two weeks in February

Posted on Monday 7th January 2013 at 11:35 pm by SH (Editor)

Stoke Gifford Sort It! Centre, Station Road, Little Stoke.

The Sort It! civic amenity site in Station Road, Little Stoke, is to be closed for two weeks in February to allow essential maintenance work to be carried out.

The site will be closed from Monday 4th February to Sunday 17th February inclusive, during which time work will undertaken to improve facilities and maintain a safe environment for residents and staff.

The works will include the introduction of pedestrian walkways with handrails and allow for the removal of steps to containers, making it easier for local residents to undertake their future recycling activities. The access road will also be resurfaced to provide a smoother ride for drivers.

Vicki May, SITA UK’s South Gloucestershire-based Regional Manager, said:

“Our overriding priority is the continued safety for all at the Sort It! Centre and working with South Gloucestershire Council (SGC) the decision to close the centre has been made to allow improvements to be carried out efficiently.”

Chair of SGC’s Communities Committee Cllr Claire Young said:

“We aim to deliver an excellent recycling service for our residents so I am very pleased to see these improvements to the Stoke Gifford Sort It! Centre. The improvements will make it even easier for people to recycle their household waste and will help us to further reduce the amount of waste that goes to landfill.”

During the temporary closure, the remaining three Sort It! Centres, at Yate, Mangotsfield and Thornbury will be open as usual every day from 8am to 4:30pm.
