Felling of trees for Gipsy Patch bus lane set to start next week

A controversial programme of work to fell a row of 20 semi-mature trees along Gipsy Patch Lane, Little Stoke, to create space for a new bus lane, is due to get under way next Monday (25th January 2021). A petition opposing the tree felling has attracted more than 300 signatures.

Ferrets stolen during burglary at Stoke Gifford property

Police are investigating a burglary in which three ferrets were stolen from a rescue sanctuary run out of private premises in Stoke Gifford. The ferrets, two males and one female, were taken from an outbuilding at the back of a property in Balmoral Close.

Covid vaccination centre set to open soon at Little Stoke GP surgery

Signs have appeared directing patients to a Covid-19 vaccination centre that is expected to open soon at Concord Medical Centre on Braydon Avenue, Little Stoke. The site forms part of the latest ‘wave’ of GP-led vaccination centres being set up across the Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire areas.

Detailed plans go in for first 144 homes along Stoke Gifford By-Pass

Housebuilder Crest Nicholson has submitted its first ‘reserved matters’ (detailed) planning application for the East of Harry Stoke (EoHS) New Neighbourhood, where 2,000 homes are expected to be built over the next six years. This first phase of the development will be marketed under the name ‘Lower Hambrook’.

‘Can’t stop me zooming’ at 1st Little Stoke Scouts

The start of a new term at 1st Little Stoke Scout Group saw all the sections continuing with an online programme using the Zoom videconferencing platform. These sessions have been a brilliant way for all the members involved in Scouting to get together, share their experiences and love of Scouting.

‘Church for changing times’: Community event to share proposals for building alterations

Plans to revamp Stoke Gifford’s medieval church to make it ‘fit for the future’ are being shared with villagers at a series of community events. The proposed changes to the interior of St Michael’s Church have been designed to increase visibility and accessibility, improve safety and add extra seating.

Stoke Gifford Scouts back meeting face to face

As of early October, the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts of 1st Stoke Gifford Scout Group have finally been able to meet up face to face again. Since lockdown, many of the sections have been working hard to keep the young members involved in Scouting, but there’s nothing like meeting up in person.

Gipsy Patch Lane mega-bridge move runs into trouble on soft ground

The installation of a £26m replacement railway bridge on Gipsy Patch Lane, Little Stoke didn’t quite go to plan over the final week in October, when the 4,260-tonne mega-structure became stuck in soft ground as it was being wheeled into position.

Youths “banned” from park following spate of vandalism

Following a report in our September magazine that thousands of pounds of malicious damage had been caused to sport and leisure equipment in Meade Park, the Journal can reveal that six young people suspected of being involved have effectively been banned from the park.

Critical phase of railway bridge replacement project about to start

The project to replace the narrow-arched Victorian railway bridge on Gipsy Patch Lane (Little Stoke) with a much wider concrete structure enters a critical phase tonight (Saturday 24th October) with the start of a 13-day railway closure during which the old bridge will be demolished and its pre-fabricated replacement installed.
