For the fourth year running staff from the Ministry of Defence at Abbey Wood will be taking part in a major swimathon at Filton Sports and Leisure Centre in a bid to raise money for ABF The Soldiers’ Charity which helps former and serving soldiers and their families who are in need.

Event organiser Michael Bell, project manager in Combat Tracked Group’s Systems Team – part of Defence Equipment and Support at Abbey Wood, said today:

“During the event on Saturday 13th October around 40 swimmers aim to cover 133 miles (215 kilometres), which is equivalent to swimming the length of the River Wye.

“They are sponsored by colleagues and friends and, by swimming for a total of ten hours they hope to raise £6,000, exceeding the total they raised for The Soldiers’ Charity during their last swimathon a year ago.”

Colonel Andy Flint, Chairman of the Bristol Fundraising Committee of ABF The Soldiers’ Charity, added:

“MoD staff at Abbey Wood are among our most valued supporters. Their efforts account for around ten per cent of the cash we raise annually in Bristol. In the past 12 months the total has exceeded £51,000.”
