Academy footballers help launch charity walk

Launch of the 2012 St Peter's Hospice Midnight Walk

Players from Bristol Academy Women’s FC, based at the WISE campus in Stoke Gifford, have helped launch the build up to this year’s Midnight Walk charity event.

Women from across Greater Bristol are being urged to ‘Love Your Hospice’ by enrolling on a fun, night time walk around the city.

Called the St Peter’s Hospice Midnight Walk, the event takes place on Saturday 7th July and it is hoped that 2,000 women will take part.

Starting at 10.:30pm from Bristol City Football Club at Ashton Gate, the walk covers ten miles through a well-marshalled route around the city, which takes in the Clifton Suspension Bridge, Brandon Hill and the SS Great Britain.

There is also a five-mile route for those who perhaps want to take it a little easier with both walks finishing at the football club.

Jo Gibbons, Head of Fundraising, said:

“The last two years have been really well supported and we want to build on that success.”

“It’s also become a major fundraising event for the hospice so it’s really important we get as many women signed up to take part.”

“What’s really good about the walk is the camaraderie amongst all those who take part from the walkers, marshals and organisers. It’s amazing to see 2,000 women all dressed in pink walking through Bristol city centre.”

“You don’t have to be super fit and many of those who have taken part over the years get dressed up to make it even more of an occasion.”

With the hospice only receiving 23% of the £6.5 million it needs to run its services from the NHS, the importance to get as many people signed up is vital so that it can continue its work caring for people with incurable illnesses.

As Bristol’s only adult hospice, last year it cared for 2,200 patients in the region and supported over 6,000 family members, including children.

Registration is £12 with walkers receiving an event pack, which includes a T-shirt.
