Abbeywood Community School’s Post-16 students celebrate “great” results

Students at Abbeywood Community School are celebrating some “great” achievements in A-level and vocational qualifications following the publication of assessment results earlier today (Thursday 17th August). Several students have been successful in gaining places at Russell Group universities, including three at Oxbridge, while others have secured prestigious degree apprenticeships.

Meade Park fire: Frustration voiced at lack of progress in police investigation

Councillors and residents have expressed frustration at the lack of progress being made in the police investigation into a suspected arson attack which destroyed children’s play equipment in Meade Park. The parish council is now looking at installing CCTV cameras in the park and has opened a public consultation on options for replacing the destroyed play equipment.

Little Stoke Sort It centre set to reopen on Monday (31st July) as strike action paused

South Glos Council’s Sort It recycling centre in Station Road, Little Stoke, is set to reopen on Monday (31st July) as a consequence of industrial action being “suspended”. The site has been temporarily closed since Monday 26th June, with the council saying this was necessary “due to the reduced workforce”. The council is warning that the site might be forced to close early if long queues form.

South Glos Council votes unanimously to condemn railway ticket office closures

South Gloucestershire Council has voted unanimously to oppose the proposed mass closure of railway station ticket offices, including the one at Parkway Station. GWR, which is consulting the public until Wednesday 26th July, has said staff would move onto concourses and platforms to be better placed to help customers and give travel advice, as well as continuing to sell tickets.

High-flying local football team on the lookout for players and sponsors

The 2022/23 season has been another successful campaign for Stoke Gifford United FC. After securing promotion to the Gloucestershire County League for the first time last year, the first team have put in a solid first season, finishing in 7th place. As the club continue to progress they are appealing for support from local businesses that would be interested in sponsorship.

Housebuilder hosts ‘walking bus’ from Harry Stoke to St Michael’s Primary School

Local housebuilder Crest Nicholson recently partnered with St Michael’s Primary School, Stoke Gifford, on a ‘walking bus’ initiative as part of Walk to School Week. Pupils, parents, guardians, carers, teachers and staff of the school took part in two walking buses on Thursday 18th May, that began at Crest Nicholson’s Highbrook View and Brooklands Park developments in Harry Stoke.

Council consults on plan to make Parkway Bridge 20mph speed limit permanent

South Gloucestershire Council is running a public consultation on a plan to make permanent the 20mph speed limit on the road that passes under Parkway Bridge in Stoke Gifford. Introduced in summer 2021, the reduced speed limit is intended to “encourage more considerate driving under and around the bridge” after the footways under the bridge were permanently widened…
